From the Sydney Opera House to the Museum of Contemporary Arts, Sydney was awash with amazing lights and sounds. A record crowd attended braving the rain which at time was torrential. It was all good fun and The Milky Way attracted its fair share of attention with people coming all the way from France to admire it!

The team has managed to hang all the crates yesterday, just before the heavy rain started...well done! Today will see the wiring being completed and the system fired up and programmed. With only 30 hours to go until the official launch of VIVID, we will be ready to entertain the crowds that will surely pour through Kendall Lane over the next 17 days! Our farmers would probably disagree, but we wish that the rain eases a little to entice more people to wander throughout the city and enjoy all the treats that all the participants have designed and set up for our annual dose of VIVID. See you all there from Friday night 6.00pm! The Milky Way Vivid from Jason Lu on Vimeo. The Milky Way installation is ready to go on site this Wednesday!
See you on the night of the 24th!
The Milky Way team welcoming us to the launch party
Great party last night for the launch of The Milky Way installation for the VIVID Festival! Seven days to go until the opening on the 24th of May in Kendall Lane. The good news are that all the gear from Lutron and Opal Lighting has been supplied and prewired, so my soldering lessons will be just another skill for another time! We would have been almost 50 people including the sponsors and their invitees. Great food, good wine, bubbly and beers, but most of all great company! It is energising to mingle with a team of talented, well behaved and charming young people, full of life and enthusiasm for their project, even though they were still up at 2.00am that morning to get everything ready! Nick Libertone from CT/Lutron and myself came in early to help with the programming of the ESN module controlling the lights, but were offered a drink instead as they had figure it all themselves, with a special mention for Thomas Stevens, even though he is the electrical engineer in the band after all... Enjoy the photos below and see you all in Kendall Lane on the 24th! The Milky Way is under construction in a - secret - warehouse in Ultimo. The 300 crates have been prepared for the hanging cables, the LED strips supplied by Opal Lighting are being wired up (after a memorable soldering lesson on Wednesday night: you can see Thomas trying his hand to it under the my watchful eye and Jason fiddling around with the control gear...) The last two nights were dedicated to - successfully - implement the DALI ESN module from LUTRON kindly supplied by Convergent Technologies. So we can expect about 80 crates to be ready and functional by the end of the week-end! Great team work! The Milky Way light installation at Vivid 2013 The website for this amazing project is now live at http://www.themilkywayvivid.com Go and have a look and discover the team, the project genesis and get the latest news from "The Milk Bar" blog. Fascinating! And obviously we expect to see you in Kendall Lane from the 24th of May and up until June 10th. A collective of young, emerging architects and designers create their VIVID Festival installation, The Milky Way. The humble milk crate's importance and use throughout the ages as a practical container is used to create an expression of art, thought and experimentation, communicated through this motion-lit sculpture suspended by steel wire cables. Milk crates a part of our culture as much as the automobile or the iPhone, but somehow they have become insignificant to our consciousness, consistent with most things humans lack interaction in. The purpose of the entry is to illuminate Kendle Lane and provide a spatial experience to the public with the neglected milk crate The Sculpture is to be set suspended through the public alley, distributed by geometric pattern design and integrated with motion sensor lighting which will provide a unique interaction with the general public. Archinterface is proud to be involved with Opal Lighting, Convergent Technologies/Lutron and the help of Vossloh Schwabe supplying the LED lighting strips, the control gear and the control system for this amazing lighting sculpture Vivid runs between 24th of May - 10th of June New Innowood InnoCoat FLON Our innovative recycled timber products have become even more of a good choice for greening your projects.
